The Arlington, Natchez, Mississippi - 1820s
Graceful porticoes, balconies to catch the breezes, an expansive, ambling floor plan ... These are the qualities so uniquely embodied in the architecture of the old south, the Antebellum plantation home. If ever a house captured this essence it was The Arlington, in Natchez, Mississippi.
As a work of art these prints are worth purchasing in their own right. For those of you interested in building a historically inspired house, these plans offer an excellent starting point. These plans actually include 2 houses. There is the main house and a complete guest wing which could stand on its own as a modest, traditional 2 story home with a kitchen/dining room, and living room on the first floor and 2 bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor. The main house has a full basement. The first floor has 4 reception rooms around a large central hallway and a kitchen to one side. The second floor contains 4 bedrooms and NO bathrooms (this was 1819 after all). But the second floor plan could easily be adjusted to provide for bathrooms. Although ideal for a flat site, these plans would also work on a moderately sloping one. This house would be comfortable in a suburb or country setting. Including porches, the main house has outside dimensions of approximately 77'x87'. More space would be needed to accommodate the guest wing.

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO BUILD: These plans are NOT complete architectural drawings as might be required by your local permitting agency and do not contain all the structural, waterproofing and other details and information necessary for construction. But your local builder or architect should be able to adapt these drawings and add to them as necessary. What they do provide is accurate design information about a REAL Southern Style home, not a pseudo-southern tract house as you will find in the house plan magazines on your supermarket shelf.
