Description
Lot Consists of a Scarce, if not, One of a Kind, Original, 1939 NYWF - New York World's Fair - Printer's block made by Nicklin Company - Printers for their line of "OFFICIALLY LICENSED POSTER STAMPS", which were sold at the fair in both 1939 and 1940. Nicklin printed sheets of 54 stamps that were folded and intended to be inserted into the printed envelopes which were to be produced with the help of this block. For some reason, probably obtaining the right to say "LICENSED" or the World's Fair Committee implemented the changes that caused them to abandon the "OFFICIAL" term for "LICENSED" and reprint envelopes using the "LICENSED" header, rather than discard the already printed sheets of stamps which say "Officially Licensed".Impression is attached with nails to the original wood (I flipped the bottom half of the third photo to show that the block is correct and matches the envelope, in size and printing content (except for title and addition of ©1939 N.Y.W.F. below Trylon / Perisphere and removal of crosses), that is in the picture). The back of the block has very light pencil text that shows a date of 2/7/39. The block's wood is nice and tight and it stands freely for display. The only issue is that the impression either expanded over time or the block wood shrank a bit causing the impression to bow upward on right top corner, below the "54". (See close-up pic of area). If you don't intend on printing with it, it displays great. It's definitely a conversation piece, I haven't seen another one and have had this one in my collection for probably 20+ years.
**Note: I Am Not Accepting Returns On This Piece Due To Nature Of It, So Be Certain You Are Satisfied With The Description And Photos Posted.
**Note: I will include the original envelope pictured with the item and if you want the sheet of stamps, I will include those as well, but I will have to fold them to ship them with the block and envelope, unless you choose to pay additional postage to ship them rolled in a tube. Contact me after purchase to arrange that.
Wood block is approx. 6" High x 8-5/16" wide and is approx. 7/8" thick. Impression is mounted on the wood with small nails and is firmly attached. There is no apparent visible damage, other than that described above. (Be sure to view photos to verify this). As stated, block stands upright freely if you choose to display it that way. Block comes as pictured, so use the photos to further describe the condition. See Pics for Details.
